Training and certification to better oneself is a definite way to help improve self esteem as well as serve and develop the community. BUFI has been a location for community members to get certified and trained in many fields throughout the years including in First Aid and CPR. In 2019 many of the BUFI Safe Passage and Upward Bound staff received their certifications here, as did numerous community members who signed up and received the free training and certification taught by the American Red Cross.

The Black United Fund of Illinois Safe Passage program has been recognized and sited many times over the years. As one of the original grassroots organizations to develop and implement the Safe Passage method of securing and watching over children as they go to and from schools since 2007 they set a precedent that would be replicated and followed by many others. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) even contracted and implemented the Safe Passage program city wide in 2012. Since then the BUFI Safe Passage program has continued to be a leader in providing safety and security to our communities and children.

Today we will be featuring one of BUFI’s Affiliates – the Family Legacy Foundation. It’s a foundation made for families and family members to grow together through education. They provide youth and adult programs to help them with furthering their education, understanding moral behavior and answering social questions that will help them in their lives. Their values are in respect, safety, and responsibility for oneself and others. You can learn more about them and what they offer at https://flfchicago.org/.

Celebrating women’s history month with some current workers at BUFI. Coming from Louisville Kentucky, Samekh Masden-Robinson is the Program Director for the BUFI Upward Bound Program. She brought her passion for black studies and political science with her when she moved to her and utilized her skills in program management and directing to move up the ranks at BUFI. Samekh designed the interior for BUFI’s Henry L. English Entrepreneurial & Business Center, worked with the summer youth programs, NRI (neighborhood recovery initiative), and held the management and HR positions in the Safe Passage Program. Being a part of starting BUFI’s Safe Passage to her work today she’s one of the unsung heroes at BUFI.
