Robert T. Starks is not only a former Chairperson of the Black United Fund of Illinois, Inc. he is a professor at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago teaching African Americans In Intercity Affairs studies. He was one of the founding board members of BUFI as well as the chairman of the Task Force For Black Political Empowerment.

Friday • April 30 | Feature Fridays

We are featuring The Real Man Charities, a non-profit organization and cultural hub for men. It began as Real Men Cook, with a focus on food security, promotion of proper nutrients and community development and then expanded their objectives to include changing the perception of black and brown men within their families in a positive way. They offer mental wellness services and education on healthy eating and cooking practices. Real Men Charities also promote empowerment and relationship building events.

Chicago Defender's Bud Billiken Parade is the largest African-American parade in the United States of America having been held since 1929. It's a commemoration of our past and a celebration for African Americans in the city of Chicago. Stretching 2 miles down Martin Luther King Dr. this parade encompasses and celebrates the community through music, dance and food. This annual event brings families back to their roots and provides resources, scholarships and investments in a better future.

National Hook-Up of Black Women, Inc. is a non-profit, community service, organization created to help Black women and families through the promotion of meaningful change and economic development. They provide no cost events and resources such as empowerment, leadership and wellness workshops. See if there's a local chapter near you to support.

The Black United Fund of Illinois Safe Passage program has been recognized and sited many times over the years. As one of the original grassroots organizations to develop and implement the Safe Passage method of securing and watching over children as they go to and from schools since 2007 they set a precedent that would be replicated and followed by many others. Chicago Public Schools (CPS) even contracted and implemented the Safe Passage program city wide in 2012. Since then the BUFI Safe Passage program has continued to be a leader in providing safety and security to our communities and children.

Today we will be featuring one of BUFI's Affiliates - the Family Legacy Foundation. It's a foundation made for families and family members to grow together through education. They provide youth and adult programs to help them with furthering their education, understanding moral behavior and answering social questions that will help them in their lives. NewsUpward Bound

Thursday • April 22 | #ThrowbackThursday

Throwback Thursday: in 2018 our BUFI Upward Bound students went on a trip to the Willis Tower's Skydeck and the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago Money Museum. Willis Tower, which is one of Chicago's biggest landmarks having held the title for the world's tallest building for years. This financial and architectural exposure event was enlightening, educational and a lot of fun.

Diane Dinkins-Carr, is the founder of the DDC Consulting Group Inc., an art appraiser of African American art, art investor, art collector and curated of art exhibitions. She has partnered with multiple organizations and helped individuals in understanding art from a business standpoint. She is a long time board member of Black United Fund, Inc. and has been very instrumental in helping to maintain BUFI's vision.
